Manipur: Suspected Militants Destroy PMGSY Bridge in Kamjong, Burn Telecom Vehicle; Police Launch Investigation
Imphal, July 22: Suspected militants allegedly blew up a Bailey bridge built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Tuesday, cutting off the only road link connecting several remote villages with the district headquarters. The attackers also allegedly torched a Telecom Department vehicle parked near the site, police said.
According to officials, the incident occurred at around 9:30 am between Phange and Chatric villages over the Namban Lok River. The bridge served as the only road connecting Chatric village and nearby areas to the Kamjong district headquarters, making it a crucial transport link for local residents.
Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the bridge was destroyed using improvised explosive devices (IEDs), causing extensive damage and disrupting road connectivity in the area.
In the same attack, a Bolero pick-up vehicle belonging to the Telecom Department, which was parked along the bank of the Namban Lok River, was allegedly set on fire. The vehicle was completely destroyed in the blaze.
Investigators suspect the attack was aimed at damaging vital public infrastructure, disrupting transportation and communication services, restricting the movement of people, and creating fear among residents of the area.
Officials described the incident as a serious challenge to public safety and security, noting that such attacks directly affect civilians by disrupting essential connectivity and government services.
Following the incident, CSD Police Station has registered a suo motu case under relevant sections of the law. A detailed investigation is underway to identify those involved and bring the perpetrators to justice.
No militant organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, and security agencies have intensified efforts to gather evidence and determine the group behind the explosion.
