JFD Urges Manipur Assembly to Ensure NRC Update with 1951 Base Year Before Census
IMPHAL, September 5: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has urged the Manipur Government to ensure that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated using 1951 as the base year before the Census is conducted, citing public concerns over demographic changes in the state.
The demand comes during the ongoing 8th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, after the state government decided to proceed with the Census following an earlier deferment.
The JFD and its Task Force called on the Assembly to include the 1951 base year in any decision related to NRC updating and take up the matter with the Government of India.
The organisation also urged the state government to send a delegation led by the Chief Minister and State Home Minister to the Centre and press for NRC updating with 1951 as the cut-off year by September 2026.
JFD further demanded a comprehensive white paper on NRC updating, along with the reconstitution and effective functioning of the State Population Commission to address demographic concerns.
It also called for a State Population Policy aimed at protecting the long-term interests of the people of Manipur.
As part of its campaign, JFD has announced a public slogan campaign on September 6 from 7 pm to 8 pm, featuring slogans such as “NO NRC, NO CENSUS” and “NRC Base Year 1951.”
The organisation has also appealed to people to gather at Citizen’s Club, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Khunou, on September 7 at 11 am to convey their demands to the Assembly and seek a clear government decision on the NRC issue.
JFD said the proposed programmes are intended to pursue the demands through democratic means and press the government to take steps to safeguard the interests of the people of Manipur.
