Manipur: Primary School Gutted After Gunfight Between Security Forces and Armed Miscreants in Kangpokpi
A primary school was completely destroyed by fire after security forces exchanged gunfire with armed miscreants in Lhunjang village of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district early Monday.
The incident occurred around 5 am, when armed miscreants allegedly approached the village with plans to launch an attack. Personnel from the Manipur Rifles and India Reserve Battalion (IRB) stationed in the area responded, leading to a gunfight that continued for about 30 minutes.
No casualties or injuries were reported during the exchange of fire.
Police said the armed miscreants fled after the firefight and allegedly set fire to the Lhunjang Primary School while retreating. The school building was completely gutted in the blaze.
Lhunjang is a small village with around 40 residents, located approximately 12 kilometres from Chalwa Police Station. Police have not yet identified the individuals involved or determined their affiliation.
An investigation into the incident is underway. The destruction of the school has further raised concerns over the continuing impact of the conflict in Manipur on civilians and essential infrastructure, particularly educational institutions.
