Manipur Detects 24,475 Undocumented Myanmar Nationals, Home Minister Tells Assembly

The Manipur government has detected 24,475 Myanmar nationals who entered the state without valid documents, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam informed the Assembly on Monday.

Of the total, 14,992 have been pushed back, while 9,483 remain in temporary relief camps in the border districts of Chandel, Kamjong and Tengnoupal.

District-wise, Chandel recorded 14,370 detections, with 9,600 pushed back and 4,770 still in relief camps. Kamjong reported 6,545, including 5,378 pushed back and 1,167 remaining in camps. In Tengnoupal, 3,560 were detected, with 14 pushed back and 3,546 still staying in relief camps.

The Home Minister also said biometric registration has started at some relief shelters, but the process has been delayed in several areas because of the security situation along the border.

During the Assembly session, Konthoujam also addressed the May 7, 2026 attack on four villages in Kamjong district. He said the incident was not considered an act of external aggression. The attack destroyed 23 houses, injured one tribal villager and caused an estimated ₹8.4 crore in property damage.

The government is arranging compensation for the affected people, while an investigation into the incident is continuing.
