Assam Flood Situation Improves, Affected Population Falls to 62,443
Guwahati, August 16: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement as the number of people affected by the deluge declined to 62,443 on Saturday, with flooding receding in two more districts.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the number of flood-affected districts has dropped to five, while no fresh flood-related deaths were reported during the previous 24 hours.
The state’s flood death toll for the year remains at 104.
Floods Continue in 235 Villages
Despite the improvement, floodwaters continued to affect 235 villages across 16 revenue circles in five districts — Golaghat, Hojai, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Jorhat.
Nagaon remains the worst-affected district in terms of population impacted by the floods.
The district has 33,332 affected people, followed by:
- Golaghat: 12,641 people
- Jorhat: 8,523 people
The latest figures represent a significant improvement from Friday, when seven districts were affected and more than 78,000 people were impacted by flooding.
More Than 4,800 People Sheltered in Relief Camps
Authorities have continued relief and rehabilitation efforts for families displaced by the floods.
More than 4,800 people are currently staying in 28 relief camps across the affected areas.
In addition, nine relief distribution centres have been established to provide essential materials to people in flood-hit locations.
Government agencies and local authorities are continuing to monitor vulnerable areas as floodwaters gradually recede.
Thousands of Hectares of Farmland Under Water
Although the overall situation has improved, agricultural land continues to face significant damage.
Floodwaters remain over approximately 4,954.43 hectares of farmland, affecting agricultural activities and potentially threatening the livelihoods of farming communities.
The prolonged presence of floodwater could also affect crops and agricultural productivity in the affected districts.
More Than 21,000 Animals Affected
The floods have also affected livestock and poultry.
Officials reported that the number of affected animals has crossed 21,000.
This includes:
- More than 10,000 large animals
- Around 3,500 poultry
Livestock losses and disruptions to animal husbandry remain another concern for flood-affected families, particularly in rural areas.
Damage to Homes and Essential Facilities
Officials have also reported damage and losses involving residential houses, livestock shelters, fishery operations and medical facilities in different flood-affected locations.
The extent of damage is expected to become clearer as floodwaters recede and authorities conduct detailed assessments.

No new flood-related fatalities were reported during the 24-hour period covered by the latest ASDMA bulletin.
As a result, Assam’s flood-related death toll for 2026 remains at 104.

Although the number of affected people and districts has declined, authorities remain alert as several villages continue to remain inundated.
