Assam Floods: Death Toll Climbs to 78, Over 3 Lakh People Still Affected Across Seven Districts
Guwahati, July 30: Assam continues to grapple with a severe flood crisis as the death toll has increased to 78 following three more fatalities reported from Sivasagar and Golaghat districts. Despite a gradual improvement in water levels in some areas, more than 3 lakh people remain affected by the disaster, according to the latest official flood bulletin.
The report stated that 3,00,031 residents across Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Biswanath, and Kamrup Metropolitan districts are still facing the impact of the floods. A total of 551 villages under 21 revenue circles remain submerged, while floodwaters have damaged standing crops spread across 21,523.08 hectares of agricultural land.
The latest casualties include two deaths in Sivasagar and one in Golaghat, taking the cumulative number of flood-related deaths in the state to 78.
Meanwhile, urban flooding continues to disrupt normal life in Kamrup Metropolitan district, where waterlogging persists in three revenue circles. Several localities, including Padumbari, Boragaon, the Excelcare Hospital area, Lachit Nagar, Zoo Road, Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Satgaon, Beharbari, Hatigaon, Wireless, Jorabat, and Kamarkuchi near Zubeen Khetra, remain inundated.
Although officials have not reported any population directly affected by the urban flooding, persistent waterlogging has caused inconvenience to residents and disrupted daily activities in several parts of Guwahati.
Authorities noted that while floodwaters have receded in many affected regions, the recovery process remains challenging. Damaged homes, thick layers of mud and silt, broken road connectivity, and extensive agricultural losses continue to slow relief and rehabilitation efforts. Thousands of families are still struggling to restore their livelihoods as government agencies and local authorities continue restoration work.
The Assam government and disaster management agencies are closely monitoring the situation while relief operations remain underway in the affected districts.
