Manipur: Imphal West Verifying 2.6 Lakh Voter Records After Discrepancies Found During Electoral Roll Revision
Imphal, July 30: The Imphal West district administration has launched an extensive verification drive after discrepancies were identified in nearly 2.6 lakh voter records during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Imphal West Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer (DEO) Mayanglambam Rajkumar said the verification process is being carried out strictly in line with the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines to ensure that the electoral rolls are accurate, transparent, and free from errors.
Rajkumar stated that Booth Level Officers (BLOs), under the supervision of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), are conducting door-to-door verification across the district. The exercise includes checking voter details, holding hearings where necessary, and issuing notices to individuals whenever discrepancies are detected before any decision is taken.
Addressing concerns over the participation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the revision process, the DEO said that 1,684 enumeration forms were forwarded through the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer to the respective district administrations. Of these, 470 forms have so far been received by the Imphal West administration for processing.
Clarifying the nature of the discrepancies, Rajkumar said that the majority involve minor clerical mistakes, such as spelling errors, incorrect surnames, or mismatched personal details, rather than major irregularities or fraudulent entries.
He added that the district administration is working closely with the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur, and the Election Commission of India to complete the Special Intensive Revision efficiently and transparently.
The DEO also appealed to political parties, civil society organisations, and community leaders to cooperate with the verification process. He assured that adequate assistance would be provided to internally displaced voters so that every eligible citizen is able to exercise their democratic right without difficulty.
The ongoing revision aims to strengthen the integrity of the electoral rolls ahead of future elections by ensuring that all eligible voters are accurately registered while correcting existing errors.
