FIFA World Cup 2026: India Yet to Get Official Broadcaster as Zee Leads Race

With just 15 days remaining for the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, football fans in India are still waiting for confirmation regarding the tournament’s official broadcaster and streaming partner.

As of late May 2026, no television or digital rights holder has been officially announced for the Indian market, creating uncertainty among viewers ahead of the global football event.

Broadcaster Deal Yet to Be Finalised

Reports indicate that major media companies including JioStar and Sony Group Corporation were engaged in negotiations with FIFA over broadcasting rights.

According to industry reports, FIFA initially demanded nearly 100 million US dollars for the 2026 and 2030 World Cup rights package before reducing the asking price to around 35 million dollars. However, broadcasters reportedly remained cautious due to concerns over sponsorship and advertising revenue.

Sony is understood to have stepped away from negotiations, while JioStar’s reported offer remained significantly lower than FIFA’s expectations.

Zee Emerges as Leading Contender

Media reports now suggest that Zee Entertainment Enterprises has emerged as the strongest contender for acquiring the India broadcast rights after other companies reportedly chose not to bid further.

Former All India Football Federation (AIFF) General Secretary Shaji Prabhakaran reportedly stated that negotiations have been completed and an official announcement could arrive soon.

If the deal is finalised, matches are expected to be broadcast through Zee’s Unite8 Sports television channels along with a possible OTT streaming platform.

FIFA+ Could Become Free Viewing Option

In the absence of a final broadcast agreement, FIFA is reportedly preparing a backup option through its digital platform FIFA+.

Under this plan, all 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup could become available free of cost through FIFA+, allowing fans to watch games on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs.

DD Sports and YouTube Unlikely

Meanwhile, Prasar Bharati has reportedly clarified before the Delhi High Court that DD Sports is not responsible for acquiring FIFA World Cup rights.

YouTube is also unlikely to provide complete live coverage in India, as FIFA’s current agreement reportedly allows only limited match highlights and selected content, subject to regional broadcasting restrictions.

Tournament Dates and India Match Timings

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

For viewers in India, most matches are expected to take place between midnight and early morning hours, with nearly 90 per cent of fixtures scheduled between 12 AM and 6 AM IST.

Football fans across the country are now awaiting an official announcement regarding television and digital streaming rights before the tournament kicks off next month.
