Manipur: 58-Year-Old Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murdering Wife in 2013
A court in Manipur’s Imphal East district has sentenced a 58-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000 for the murder of his wife in 2013.
The sentence was pronounced on Friday, November 6, by Sessions Judge Kh. Ajit against Md. Abdul Halim, a resident of Kwakta Khuman. He was earlier found guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on August 11. The court further directed that the time already spent in custody during the investigation and trial be adjusted against his prison term.
According to the case details, the incident took place on June 14, 2013, at the couple’s rented house in Golapati Maning Leikai Tangki Makhong. Police records stated that Halim attacked his wife, Amubi, with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds before escaping to a nearby house. He was subsequently located and arrested by the police that evening.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution relied on the testimonies of 15 witnesses, 21 documentary exhibits and eight physical evidence items collected from the crime scene. Public Prosecutor Tongbram Bipinchandra maintained that the brutality of the offence justified the harshest punishment.
On the other hand, the defence appealed for a reduced sentence, citing Halim’s clean criminal record, approaching age of 60 and alleged personal reformation through regular religious activities. After considering the case, the court awarded him rigorous life imprisonment.
