Manipur CM Calls for Preservation of Ancient Records, Scripts at Archives Week
Imphal, September 15: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has stressed the need to preserve the state’s ancient manuscripts, archival records and indigenous script, describing them as important sources of Manipur’s historical identity and civilisational heritage.
Speaking at the 44th Archives Week Celebration and Records Exhibition-2026 at the Manipur State Archives Complex, Keishampat, Imphal, the Chief Minister appreciated members of the public who have preserved and contributed old documents and manuscripts from their private collections.
Khemchand highlighted the importance of ancient Puyas, saying they contain valuable information about Manipur’s society, including traditional architecture, lifestyles, historical chronicles, stories of queens, archaeological remains and medicinal plant knowledge. He said such records also reflect the scientific aspects of traditional knowledge systems.
The Chief Minister also underlined the significance of Manipur’s indigenous script and called its preservation a matter of pride for the state.
Government Considers Incentives for Manuscript Custodians
Khemchand said the government is considering incentives for individuals who have protected ancient manuscripts and historical records over the years. He said the matter had been discussed with the Art & Culture Minister and Commissioner, and the department has been asked to submit a proposal to the State Cabinet.
During the programme, the Chief Minister inaugurated the New Stack Room Building of the Manipur State Archives and launched a Reading and Teaching Programme on old archaic scripts.
He also released the 2026 archival publication “Colonial Tour Records of Manipur” and opened an exhibition displaying historical records and manuscripts related to the state’s heritage.
