Manipur CM Khemchand Singh Reviews Development Projects in Senapati, Clears Rikhruri Multipurpose Dam

Senapati, Manipur: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday undertook a comprehensive visit to Senapati district to inspect ongoing development projects, review the implementation of government schemes, and interact with local residents, civil society organisations, and community leaders.

The district tour began with a visit to the government potato farm at Mao, where officials briefed the Chief Minister on the challenges affecting agricultural production. Commissioner of Horticulture T.N. Panmei informed him that inadequate funding over the past two years had significantly impacted the farm’s productivity.

Responding to the concerns, Khemchand Singh observed that Mao’s favourable climate offers immense potential not only for potato cultivation but also for floriculture and other horticultural activities. He assured that the state government would engage with all stakeholders to address the issues and explore measures to strengthen the agricultural sector in the region.

Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, legislators and senior district officials, the Chief Minister later met representatives of the United Naga Council (UNC) at the Mini Secretariat Complex in Senapati town to hear their concerns and discuss matters relating to the district.

The Chief Minister also attended a public reception organised at the ACI Auditorium in Punanamei village, where he was welcomed by members of the Mao Council, Mao Students’ Union and landowners associated with the Mao potato farm.

Addressing the gathering, Khemchand Singh announced that the state government has formally approved the Rikhruri Multipurpose Dam project. He said the proposed dam is expected to provide a reliable supply of drinking water to 27 surrounding villages, improving water security in the region.

During the programme, the Mao Council and the Poumai Naga Union submitted separate memorandums outlining various developmental demands and public concerns.

The Chief Minister also responded to a proposal submitted by the Mao Students’ Union seeking the establishment of a Multipurpose Skill Training, Trade and Youth Activity Centre at Mao. He assured that the proposal would be placed before the State Cabinet for consideration.

Regarding a memorandum related to the implementation of an agreement involving landowners of the Mao potato farm, Khemchand Singh said the government would hold discussions with the concerned departments before taking an appropriate decision.

The Chief Minister’s visit was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho; MLAs Tongbram Robindro Singh, Sheikh Noorul Hassan and J. Kumo Sha; Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar; Commissioner of Horticulture T.N. Panmei; Deputy Commissioner of Senapati Dharun Kumar S.; Director of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nelson Yumnam; Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Devabarta Sharma; Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department Y.
