Manipur: Court Convicts Man for 2013 Murder of Wife in Imphal East
Imphal, Manipur: A local court in Imphal has convicted 58-year-old Md. Abdul Halim for the 2013 murder of his wife at their rented residence in Golapati Maning Leikai Tangki Makhong, Imphal East district.
The conviction was pronounced on Tuesday following the conclusion of arguments in the long-pending murder case. The final arguments were heard on June 24, bringing the prosecution’s lengthy legal proceedings to a significant stage.
Murder Case Dates Back to 2013
The case originated on June 14, 2013, when the victim’s son lodged a complaint at the concerned police station.
According to police records presented during the proceedings, Halim allegedly attacked his wife with a knife inside their rented residence at around 5:40 pm that day.
The woman sustained critical injuries in the attack. Family members and neighbours reportedly rushed her to Public Hospital in Hatta for emergency treatment.
However, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after reaching the hospital.
Accused Arrested Hours After Attack
Following the alleged stabbing, Halim reportedly fled from the residence and took shelter at a nearby house.
Police launched an immediate search operation and traced him to the location. He was arrested at around 7 pm on the same day, according to the case records.
The investigation was led by Inspector Kishore Kumar Salam, who subsequently completed the investigation and submitted the chargesheet after collecting evidence related to the case.
Prosecution Presents Witnesses and Evidence
During the trial, the prosecution presented substantial evidence to establish the charges against the accused.
The court heard testimony from 15 prosecution witnesses. The prosecution also produced 21 documentary exhibits and eight material exhibits recovered or collected during the investigation.
The accused appeared as the sole defence witness during the proceedings.
After examining the evidence and submissions made by both sides, the court found Md. Abdul Halim guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Court Orders Fresh Arrest Warrant
Following the conviction, the court issued a fresh arrest warrant against Halim.
The court also directed the Officer-in-Charge of Porompat Police Station to produce the convicted man before the court for final sentencing and further legal proceedings.
The sentencing proceedings will determine the punishment to be imposed following the conviction.
Long-Running Legal Battle Reaches Conviction
The conviction marks a major development in a case that remained pending for more than a decade.
The prosecution’s case was built on witness testimony, documentary evidence and material exhibits collected from the scene of the incident.
With the court now finding Halim guilty of the 2013 murder, the matter has moved to the sentencing stage.
