Delhi: Manipuri Musician Chongtham Vikram Dies After Alleged Assault
Renowned Manipuri guitarist and Western music pioneer Chongtham Vikram Singh, 54, died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of people near his residence in Kilokari village, southeast Delhi, police said on Monday.
According to Delhi Police, a PCR call about the alleged beating was received at Sunlight Colony Police Station on September 7. A preliminary inquiry found that Vikram had objected to alleged shouting and disturbance by delivery workers and dhaba staff outside his residence.
Police said Vikram came downstairs to question the alleged nuisance, following which he was reportedly attacked with fists and blows. He suffered injuries and was taken to Holy Family Hospital by his son, Yaiphaba, for treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the assault and Vikram’s death. Several suspects, including a minor, have been detained or apprehended in connection with the case.
Vikram was a prominent figure in Manipur’s Western music movement and had performed with bands including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark. He was also the eldest son of renowned Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala.
The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University (NESSDU) condemned the alleged assault and called for a swift and impartial investigation.
Members of the Northeast community and civil society groups gathered at Sunlight Colony Police Station, demanding that all those responsible be identified and prosecuted.
Some community members have alleged that the incident could have involved racial targeting. However, police have not established any such motive, and the exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation.
Delhi Police said necessary legal action is being taken and that further facts will be established during the investigation.
