Manipur: Former MPS Officer Thounaojam Brinda Joins Congress, Announces Yaiskul Bid for 2027 Assembly Elections

Imphal, July 13: Former Manipur Police Service (MPS) officer and noted anti-drug campaigner Thounaojam Brinda has officially joined the Indian National Congress, marking a significant political development ahead of the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections. Alongside 10 other prominent personalities, Brinda was inducted into the party during a programme held in Imphal.

At the event, Brinda also formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly election from the Yaiskul Assembly Constituency, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched electoral contest.

The newly inducted members were welcomed into the Congress by former Manipur Chief Minister and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Okram Ibobi Singh, who urged the people to support political change in both Manipur and at the national level during the upcoming elections.

Addressing party workers and supporters, Ibobi Singh described the 2027 Assembly elections as crucial for the future of the state and appealed to voters to give the Congress a fresh mandate.

Apart from Brinda, several notable personalities from different professional backgrounds also joined the Congress. These include M. Anwar Hussain, former BJP candidate from Lilong; Kh. Devendro, former MLA from Sekmai; Colonel Md. Sahid Khan (Retd.); senior advocate Laishram Sashibhusan; retired IUCB AGM Longjam Suranjoy; retired associate professor B. Sharat Sharma; retired District Supply Officer Th. Oxford; retired Assistant Commandant Yengkhom Sanjeep; retired Executive Engineer Kh. Gambhir; and retired teacher Md. Nasir Khan.

Speaking after joining the party, Brinda reaffirmed her commitment to serving the people of Yaiskuland addressing the constituency’s key issues if elected.

This will be Brinda’s second attempt to enter the Manipur Legislative Assembly from Yaiskul. She contested the 2022 Assembly elections, where she was defeated by the incumbent Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Thokchom Satyabrata.

Brinda first came into the public spotlight during her tenure as a police officer when she led a high-profile anti-drug operation in 2018. The case later became controversial after the principal accused was acquitted, prompting Brinda to return her gallantry medal as a mark of protest.

Her decision to join the Congress and officially announce her candidature is expected to intensify political activity in Yaiskul and across Manipur as parties begin preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.
