Manipur: Fresh Landslides Delay Reopening of NH-102A Tadubi–Ukhrul Highway
Imphal, July 12: Continuous rainfall has triggered fresh landslides along the Tadubi–Ukhrul section of National Highway-102A (NH-102A) in Manipur, bringing traffic to a complete halt and further delaying the reopening of the key highway.
The highway, which has remained closed since June 27 for blacktopping and maintenance work, has suffered repeated mudslides near Vaorei, disrupting restoration efforts and leaving commuters and transport operators stranded.
The prolonged closure has significantly affected transportation between Senapati, Ukhrul and Imphal, causing inconvenience to passengers and hampering the movement of essential goods.
A joint inspection of the affected area was conducted by representatives of the Senapati District Truck Drivers’ Union, Senapati District Truck Owners’ Association, and officials of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Although machinery cleared some of the accumulated debris, fresh landslides caused by persistent rain buried the road once again, forcing work to stop.
Transporters stressed that the highway has become a crucial alternative route due to the prevailing security concerns on the Senapati–Kangpokpi stretch of National Highway-2 (NH-2). Many travellers, particularly from Naga-inhabited areas, are reportedly avoiding that route because of the security situation, making NH-102A an essential corridor for safe travel.
NHIDCL officials said continuous rainfall and unstable hill slopes have made restoration work extremely challenging. They stated that their immediate priority is to remove debris and restore temporary vehicular movement, while permanent blacktopping and road improvement works will resume once weather conditions become favourable.
Authorities have urged commuters to remain cautious and cooperate with road maintenance teams as efforts continue to restore connectivity on the important highway.
