Manipur Governor Constitutes District-Level Peace Committees Across All Districts

The Governor of Manipur has constituted District-Level Peace Committees in all districts of the state, with the respective District Magistrates appointed as chairpersons.

According to an official notification issued on Tuesday, the initiative aims to improve the prevailing law and order situation by promoting sustained dialogue, community participation and confidence-building measures to strengthen peacebuilding efforts across the state.

The decision comes following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inquiry regarding the formation of a unified body to promote communal harmony. Subsequently, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced on October 24 plans to establish an inclusive body representing all 36 communities of Manipur.

The committees will comprise representatives from various sectors, including Superintendents of Police, Sub-Divisional Officers, Sub-Deputy Collectors and other concerned district officials. They will also include local community leaders, civil society organisations, NGOs, media representatives, retired government officials, healthcare professionals, academicians and other members considered appropriate by the respective chairpersons.

The committees have been assigned 13 Terms of Reference and four core functions to guide their activities and responsibilities. They are required to convene meetings at least once every fortnight, with additional meetings to be organised whenever necessary, depending on the local security situation.

The initiative is expected to strengthen communication among different communities and stakeholders while promoting dialogue, mutual understanding and confidence-building as part of efforts to restore peace and harmony in Manipur.
