Manipur: Report Claims 737 Meitei Voters Omitted from Churachandpur Draft Electoral Roll During SIR
Imphal, July 20: A total of 737 Meitei voters from the Churachandpur Assembly Constituencyhave reportedly been excluded from the draft electoral roll released after the enumeration phase of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Manipur, raising concerns among affected residents and displaced families.
According to the draft electoral roll, the omitted names have been classified under categories including “Missing,” “Absent,” “Dead,” and “Shifted Residence.” The reported exclusions have drawn attention as many members of the Meitei community were displaced from Churachandpur following the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur in May 2023.
The reported omission has caused concern among affected families, who fear they may lose their voting rights if their names are not reinstated before the publication of the final electoral roll. Many of those excluded are believed to be internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been residing outside Churachandpur since the outbreak of the conflict.
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is being conducted by the Election Commission to update electoral rolls by verifying the eligibility, identity, and current residence of registered voters ahead of future elections. The exercise includes door-to-door verification and scrutiny of voter records before the preparation of the final electoral roll.
The reported exclusion of a large number of voters from a conflict-affected constituency has added to discussions surrounding electoral representation and the challenges faced by internally displaced communities in Manipur.
Election authorities are expected to consider claims and objections submitted during the revision process before publishing the final electoral roll. Eligible voters whose names have been omitted may seek inclusion through the procedures prescribed by the Election Commission.
