Manipur: Security Forces Dismantle 26 Illegal Bunkers, Recover Arms and Ammunition in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, June 17: Security forces have dismantled 26 illegal bunkers and recovered arms, ammunition, and other materials during a series of anti-insurgency operations carried out in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, officials said on Wednesday.

According to official reports, the bunkers were allegedly established by anti-social elements associated with Naga and Kuki groups in sensitive and vulnerable areas of the district. The operations were conducted as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and prevent armed activities in the region.

In the first phase of the operation, combined teams of security personnel destroyed 14 bunkers. Five of the structures were located along the Mongkot Chepu–Patlijang hill range, while the remaining nine were found along the Lungphu Junction–Industrial Estate Centre hill stretch. During the operation, security personnel recovered two empty 5.56 mm cartridge casings from the area.

In a separate operation under the jurisdiction of Litan Police Station, security forces dismantled an additional 12 bunkers. Of these, two were located along the Shangkai–Mongkot Chepu village hill stretch, while ten others were found in the Leingangching–Sikibung village hill area.

Security personnel also recovered a pair of binoculars, 21 empty cartridge casings of different calibres, and eight live rounds of Single Barrel Breech Loading (SBBL) ammunition during the search operations.

Officials stated that cordon-and-search operations, area domination exercises, and intelligence-based missions are continuing in vulnerable and fringe areas across several districts, including Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Thoubal.

To strengthen security and monitor movement in sensitive zones, additional nakas and checkpoints have been established at strategic locations. Extensive combing operations are also being conducted to detect and prevent any unlawful activities.

Senior police officials said that Mukesh Singh is personally overseeing operations in areas that have recently witnessed an increase in inter-community tensions and armed incidents.

The latest operations form part of broader efforts by security agencies to restore stability, dismantle illegal defensive structures, and maintain peace in conflict-prone regions of Manipur.
