Students from Manipur over the alleged sexual assault of a minor Tripuri girl

Assam Police have taken into custody five students from Manipur over the alleged sexual assault of a minor Tripuri girl.

The arrests came after the survivor lodged a formal complaint, leading investigators to uncover crucial digital evidence. Officials said the incident occurred earlier this month at a rented house, where the minor was reportedly deceived and then assaulted.

During the probe, police seized video footage from the suspects’ mobile phones, which verified the participation of several individuals. The accused students were identified as Robinson/ Rubyson Mayengbam, Alex Wahengbam, Tolendrajit Asem, Haomom Nongmaihanba Khuman, Oscar Nongthombam.

They now face charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Sources suggest that the accused might be the same group from Assam Down Town University previously criticized for allegedly insulting the National Flag on Independence Day, though police have not officially confirmed the link. Authorities emphasized that the investigation is being carried out swiftly and assured the public of fair legal proceedings.

Police also cautioned citizens against sharing videos or sensitive material related to the case, warning that such actions constitute a punishable offense. Women’s organizations in the Northeast condemned the crime and urged for prompt justice to strengthen trust in law enforcement and safeguard vulnerable groups.

It was the first time in history that such an event happened in India, something Manipur students never expected. India witnessed an incident that Manipur students could not imagine.
