UK-Based Northeast Group Seeks Swift Probe into Killing of Manipuri Musician Vikram Chongtham
The North East Indians in UK (NEIUK) has condemned the killing of Manipuri musician Vikram Chongtham in New Delhi and called for a swift, transparent and impartial investigation into the case.
According to NEIUK, Chongtham was killed in Delhi on September 7. The organisation expressed solidarity with his family, friends and the wider Northeast Indian community and urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure justice through due process.
NEIUK said the incident has renewed concerns about the safety of people from Northeast India living, working and studying in other parts of the country. It highlighted concerns over reported cases of racial discrimination, verbal abuse, harassment, intimidation and stereotyping faced by people from the region.
The organisation also referred to the recent death of 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma following an assault in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, saying that such incidents have intensified concerns within the Northeast community over safety and racial abuse.
NEIUK urged the Centre, Delhi Government, Delhi Police and other concerned authorities to take stronger measures to protect people from Northeast India. It also called for complaints involving racial abuse, harassment and intimidation to be properly recorded, investigated and acted upon.
The UK-based group stressed that people from the Northeast should be able to live, work and study safely across India and urged authorities to take decisive action.
NEIUK said that Vikram Chongtham deserves justice and that his family deserves answers.
