Spain Crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 Champions After Extra-Time Victory Over Argentina

Spain captured the FIFA World Cup 2026 title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a tense final that was decided in extra time. A 106th-minute goal by Ferran Torres sealed Spain’s second World Cup triumph, ending Lionel Messi and Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy.

The final remained goalless throughout the regulation 90 minutes, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances. Spain finally broke the deadlock in extra time when substitute Ferran Torres fired home with a powerful left-footed finish after a rebound, delivering the decisive moment of the match. Earlier in extra time, Nico Williams had a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández received a red card late in normal time, forcing the defending champions to play the entire extra-time period with ten men. Despite a determined defensive display, they were unable to hold off Spain’s relentless pressure.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a remarkable performance with a record number of saves in a World Cup final, but his efforts were ultimately not enough to prevent defeat. The loss marked an emotional end to what is widely expected to be Lionel Messi’s final FIFA World Cup appearance, with the Argentine captain visibly emotional after the final whistle.

The victory gives Spain its second FIFA World Cup title, adding to its historic triumph in 2010. Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain completed an outstanding tournament, reinforcing its status among the world’s elite football nations.
