Manipur Government Urges JFD to Put NRC Deadline on Hold

IMPHAL, October 3, 2026: The Manipur Government has appealed to the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) to keep its September 30 deadline on hold, assuring that its demands concerning the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are being taken seriously.

Government spokesperson and MLA Sapam Ranjan said the government is working to address the issues raised by the JFD and requested additional time to pursue the matter with the Centre. He noted that Census-related operations in Manipur have already been postponed.

A major JFD demand is to update the NRC using 1951 as the base year before conducting the Census in the state. The organisation has also sought preservation of the original 1951 NRC records, measures concerning illegal immigration, a State Population Policy and strengthening of the Manipur State Population Commission.

The government’s appeal comes amid the JFD Women Wing’s ongoing “No NRC, No Census”campaign, which has been seeking support from MLAs for its demands. Reports said the campaign had secured signatures from 18 legislators by October 2.

Ranjan urged the JFD to cooperate with the government and allow more time to pursue the NRC-related issues with the Centre, stressing that the matter concerns the future and development of Manipur.
