Manipur Imposes Indefinite Prohibitory Orders Across Bishnupur District Amid Security Concerns
Bishnupur, June 13: The Manipur government has imposed indefinite prohibitory orders throughout Bishnupur district in response to concerns over the prevailing law and order situation. The restrictions came into effect from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and will remain in force until further notice.
According to an order issued by the District Magistrate of Bishnupur, the assembly of five or more persons in public places has been prohibited across the district. The order also bans the carrying of firearms, sticks, clubs, spears, explosives, and other objects that could potentially be used to cause violence or disturb public peace.
The decision follows a high-level security review conducted by Manipur Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh, who visited the District Police Headquarters in Bishnupur along with senior officials on Saturday. During the visit, the DGP reviewed the district’s security environment, crime trends, and operational challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.
During interactions with police personnel, the DGP emphasized the need to strengthen counter-insurgency measures and intensify anti-narcotics operations. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring the safe and sustainable resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and directed officials to accelerate investigations being handled by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
A separate coordination meeting was held with commanders of the Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) deployed in the district. Discussions focused on enhancing security arrangements in vulnerable and fringe areas, particularly during the ongoing farming season.
The prohibitory order further restricts the organization of rallies, public processions, demonstrations, and gatherings without prior written permission from the District Magistrate. Obstruction of roads, transportation routes, and essential public services has also been prohibited.
However, exemptions have been granted to security forces, government officials performing official duties, and personnel engaged in essential services. These include healthcare workers, PHED and power department staff, educational institutions, municipal employees, media personnel, ATM cash replenishment teams, banking and financial institutions, child and women helpline services, elder care services, telecom operators, and judicial institutions functioning under the jurisdiction of the High Court of Manipur.
Authorities have warned that any violation of the restrictions will attract legal action under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The move reflects the administration’s efforts to maintain public order and strengthen security preparedness amid ongoing challenges in parts of the state.
