Manipur to Deploy Three CoBRA Battalions to Strengthen Anti-Insurgency Operations: CM Khemchand Singh
Imphal, June 14: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced the deployment of three Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) units of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to strengthen anti-insurgency operations and enhance security across the state.
Addressing his first press conference after a recent meeting with Narendra Modi in New Delhi, the Chief Minister said the specialised battalions would support ongoing operations being carried out by central and state security forces in vulnerable and sensitive areas.
According to the Chief Minister, one CoBRA battalion has already been stationed in Manipur and its personnel are currently undergoing a 45-day acclimatisation and training programme to adapt to the state’s terrain and operational environment.
He further revealed that two additional CoBRA units are expected to arrive within the next three to four days. Once fully deployed, the three elite battalions will participate in extensive combing and anti-insurgency operations aimed at improving the overall security situation in the state.
Responding to questions from journalists, Khemchand Singh acknowledged that security forces operating in Manipur face considerable challenges due to limited manpower and the complex nature of the conflict. However, he expressed confidence that the arrival of the specialised units would significantly strengthen ongoing operations.
The CoBRA units are among the most highly trained formations of the CRPF, known for their expertise in guerrilla warfare, jungle combat, and counter-insurgency missions. Their deployment is expected to provide additional operational capabilities in areas affected by security concerns.
While highlighting the importance of enhanced security measures, the Chief Minister stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved through force alone. He appealed to people residing in both the hill and valley regions to cooperate with the administration and security agencies in maintaining peace and stability.
“Even if additional security personnel are deployed, meaningful progress cannot be achieved without the support and cooperation of the public,” the Chief Minister stated.
The deployment of the three CoBRA battalions forms part of broader efforts by the state and central governments to strengthen security mechanisms and restore normalcy in Manipur amid ongoing challenges to law and order.
