PM Modi Praises Manipur Astrophysicist Ronaldo Laishram in 136th Mann Ki Baat
Imphal, Manipur | July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the achievements of Manipur-born astrophysicist Dr. Ronaldo Laishram while highlighting inspiring citizen-led initiatives from across India during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat.
The Prime Minister showcased remarkable contributions in science, environmental conservation, and sustainable development, drawing examples from Manipur, Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh to encourage public participation in nation-building.
PM Modi Recognises Manipur Scientist’s Global Achievement
Among the highlights of the programme, Prime Minister Modi commended Dr. Ronaldo Laishram, an astrophysicist from Manipur who is currently working in Japan. Dr. Laishram was part of an international team of researchers that discovered a massive cluster of young galaxies.
The newly discovered galaxy cluster has been named the Loktak Proto-Cluster, inspired by Loktak Lake, Manipur’s iconic freshwater lake.
Speaking during Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said:
“I would like to tell you all about Dr. Ronaldo Laishram from Manipur. His name is Ronaldo, but he is an astrophysicist. He works in Japan and was part of the team that discovered a large cluster of young galaxies. They named this entire cluster the Loktak Proto-Cluster after the beautiful Loktak Lake in Manipur.”
PM Modi said the achievement reflects India’s growing contribution to global scientific research and brings pride to the people of Manipur and the country.
‘Waste to Wealth’ Initiative from Bihar Highlighted
The Prime Minister also appreciated an innovative Waste to Wealth initiative from Sitamarhi, Bihar, where discarded plastic waste is being recycled into benches for public spaces.
He described the project as an excellent example of sustainable resource management and how local communities can transform waste into valuable public assets through innovation and collective effort.
Indian Grey Hornbill Returns to Gir Forest
Highlighting positive developments in wildlife conservation, PM Modi noted the return of the Indian Grey Hornbill to the Gir forests of Gujarat after nearly six decades.
He called the bird’s return a significant ecological achievement and a positive outcome of sustained conservation efforts to protect India’s biodiversity.
Massive Tree Plantation Drive in Ahmedabad
The Prime Minister further praised a remarkable environmental campaign in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where more than 3.5 lakh saplings were planted in the Bhaij area within just one hour.
He said the campaign demonstrated the strength of collective public participation and reflected the increasing awareness among citizens about environmental protection and sustainable development.
