Manipur BJP MLA L Susindro Meitei Renews Threat to Quit Party Over Public Interest Concerns
Imphal, August 15: Manipur BJP MLA L Susindro Meitei has renewed his warning that he could leave the Bharatiya Janata Party if the BJP-led state government fails to address public concerns and work in the interests of the people.
Speaking to reporters after attending a Har Ghar Tiranga programme in Khurai, Imphal East, on Friday, August 14, Meitei clarified that he has no immediate plans to quit the BJP, but said circumstances could force him to take such a step if the government’s performance does not improve.
Susindro Meitei Says Public Interest Comes First
The former minister said his priority remains serving the people of his Khurai Assembly constituencyand staying connected with his constituents.
“I have no immediate plans to leave the BJP. However, I might be compelled to leave if the BJP-led government is not working in the interests of the people,” he said.
Meitei also maintained that he has no objection to the BJP as a political party but expressed concerns about the way the party is being led at the state level.
“The BJP is good, but there exist problems concerning those who are leading the party in the state,” Meitei said.
Khurai Constituents Urge Him to Consider Another Platform
Meitei said some people from his Khurai constituency had urged him not to contest the next Assembly election on a BJP ticket.
According to the MLA, constituents have suggested that he could contest the election from another political party or as an independent candidate.
However, Meitei did not announce any decision to change parties and reiterated that his immediate focus remains on working for the people of his constituency.
MLA Had Issued Similar Warning in July
This is not the first time Meitei has expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the state government.
On July 26, he had warned that he could be compelled to leave the BJP if the government’s functioning continued to remain unsatisfactory.
At that time, he criticised what he described as a decline in the government’s performance after the new administration took charge following the lifting of President’s Rule in February.
He had said the performance of the government had not declined significantly when he was part of the Council of Ministers or during President’s Rule, but claimed that the performance graph had subsequently fallen.
Meitei had made the remarks without directly naming Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
Former Minister in N Biren Singh Government
L Susindro Meitei previously served as the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministerin the government headed by former Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
His latest remarks indicate continuing differences over the functioning of the BJP-led government as Manipur prepares for the next Assembly election.
The state is scheduled to go to the polls next year, making political statements from sitting legislators particularly significant.
“Go With the People and Work for Them”
On Friday, Meitei again emphasised that his political decisions would be guided primarily by the interests of his constituents.
“What is important for me is to go with the people and work for them,” he said.
His comments suggest that while he has not yet taken a decision to leave the BJP, he is keeping his political options open if he believes the government fails to meet public expectations.
