Nimisha Thakuria Death: Assam CM Says Guilty Will Face Action
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed grief over the death of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria and said those found responsible will face action after the investigation.
Nimisha, a 22-year-old university student, was found unconscious at a homestay in the Dharapur-Garal area of Guwahati on Saturday. She was taken to a local health centre and later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Sarma said investigators would examine all aspects of the case, including Nimisha’s statements and social media posts, visit her residence and speak with her family. He also said he would remain updated on the progress of the investigation.
The Chief Minister also spoke about personal safety, family values and traditional customs while referring to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have detained 26-year-old Ashiq Ali, who was staying with Nimisha at the homestay. Ali has reportedly claimed that Nimisha died by suicide, but police have not established this version and are examining all possible angles. The post-mortem report is awaited.
The homestay has also been sealed following alleged lapses in maintaining guest records. Police are examining the establishment’s records and the circumstances under which Nimisha and Ali stayed there.
Sarma said the investigation would continue and those found guilty would be punished.
